According to the Inca mythology, Lake Titicaca is the place where emerged the founders of the Inca empire who worshipped the sun god Wiracoccha as the creator of the universe.
This is why the lake is considered a sacred place of great spiritual power and strong magnetic attraction and concentrated cosmic energy.
Lake Titicaca, at an altitude of 3810 meters, is on one of the most extensive plateaus of the tropical Andes. On different parts of its great longitude of 176 kilometers, islands emerge like mountains from its depth of 284 meters.
Its richness lies in the beauty of its sceneries, its culture and history. Thanks to its ecosystem of plants, fish and birds, the Pukares, Aymares, Quechuas and Uros (creators of the Andina culture), have been able to prosper and develop. The average temperature of the water is 13 degrees celcius, varying between 11 degress in autumn and 15 degrees in spring and summer. Because of its area and enormous mass of water, the thermoregulator effect on the region has a great impact on the biological support it maintains. Navigation on Lake Titicaca goes back to its origins. The Uros were the first navigators who used the“totora reed” rafts for fishing and communicating. The first passenger and cargo ships where the steam boats “Yavari” and “Yapura” which were built in England in 1862 by the government of marshall Ramon Castilla. These boats were sent in pieces to the port of Arica. From there, by train to Tacna; and from Tacna to Puno on horse’s back, as far as 370 km.
The Ollanta boat was built by the english in 1932, very modern and comfortable. Then , in 1970, “THE FERRY BOAT”, built in Canada, armed in Huaje under the care of the Peruvian navy.
